If you’re serious about getting and staying in shape you may be overlooking one key component: the proper apparel and accessories for your fitness routine. We’re not saying you need a high fashion outfit to workout at the gym; we’re talking about apparel that has a specific purpose in a sport or exercise. Here are some tips to help you choose what will benefit your personal workout:
Shoes: shoes are the most important part of your exercise, no matter what kind of workout you do. If you play basketball the proper shoes will help you run, stop, and turn faster because they give you traction and support; if you walk you’ll need arch support and proper cushioning. Always wear shoes designed for your sport and you’ll notice an improvement in your output.
Safety items: if you bike you should wear a helmet; soccer players need pads. Anything you do near traffic like biking, running, and walking require safety items such as a reflective vest or jacket to make you more visible to drivers.
Clothing: while clothing can be fashionable or casual, the main thing to keep in mind is that it matches your specific exercise. If you do aerobics, dance, or yoga you might prefer to wear a leotard for flexibility but it’s not a requirement. The same goes for walking, running, or biking: spandex might be the recommended wear for long distance biking but you don’t have to wear it. Sweatpants and a t-shirt will work just fine if that’s what you feel most comfortable in; if you’re exercising with a group of friends you might be more comfortable going with what the crowd is wearing.
If you’re not sure what’s best for your personal routine, do a quick search online to see what the pros wear during similar routines. You can also visit a gym or look for videos online to see what works for others. If you’re not clear about the benefits of a certain shoe or style of clothing don’t hesitate to ask or to look it up before you purchase it for yourself. That’s how we learn new things!
